Books are available 24 hours a day on open shelves on the library's porch and recessed windowsills
Founded in 2001, the Verbier Library welcomes tourists and residents alike. It is not an academic or reference library, but has an extensive collection of the very latest recreational reading in French and English. The library has more than 1,000 members and more than 6,000 books. Membership is free to any resident of the commune of Bagnes, including seasonal workers, and to anyone who becomes a member of LES AMIS DE VERBIER.
The library is staffed entirely by volunteers. The commune graciously provides Chalet Montfleury and LES AMIS DE VERBIER donates the annual book budget. Each year the library acquires some 800 new items, half from donations. Books more than a few years old are removed from the shelves and given away to the public.
At all times of the year you will find some 500 books in French and English available 24 hours a day on open shelves on the library’s porch and recessed windowsills. These books are free for anyone to take away. And they include some of the latest bestsellers
The library has more than 7,000 items including one of the largest collections of DVD movies (over 1000) and comic books in the region. There is a special collection of books on Switzerland and some 2,000 books for children. Novels and biographies in French (65%) and English focus on the most recent bestsellers. There are also books on travel, cooking, history and science.
The library depends heavily upon your donations of books and DVDs, and on funds to buy books. We are always looking for volunteers.
The Library is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, who give generously of their time and enthusiasm.
Volunteers range in age from 11 to 87 and hail from 11 different nations. Most speak both French and English, to some extent.
We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers... no experience is necessary.
